Multimedia extensions
The Guide to European Science and Technology now includes multimedia extensions:
- photographs, which are shown in 16 or 256 colours, depending
on the screen you are using;
- sound recordings;
- digital video, which has now been demonstrated; video clips are
being processed to be incorporated in the next edition.

Sound extensions
Sound extensions
As you can guess, to take advantage of the sound extensions to your guide to European Science and Technology, you first need to install them; but you also need a system that can output voice.
But this is probably your case ...
First of all, you must run Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher, which already include the appropriate multimedia extensions (in particular, a file called 'mmsystem.dll'); otherwise, you should consider upgrading your present 3.0 version.
Do you also have appropriate hardware? The alternative is simple:
- either you have already installed a sound card in your PC,
with connected speakers, enabling you to output sound;
- or you unfortunately do not own such a card.
But even in the latter case, you will be able to listen to our recordings, using the small loudspeaker built in your PC. All you need to do is to install the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker which is part of the Windows 3.1 Driver Library and has been copied to your hard-disk together with the sound extensions to the Guide to European Science and Technology.
Stopping the sound
Please also remember that you can stop the sound being played by pressing the Escape key and keeping it depressed until the sound stops.
ce, listed at the end of this document.
r PC-Speaker
To install the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker :
- Run Control Panel
- Open the Drivers icon
- Select the Add ... option
- Choose Unlisted or Updated Driver from the List of Drivers
- You will then be asked to Insert the disk with the unlisted driver: type the path of the
directory where you have installed the sound extensions to your guide to European Science
and Technology or use the Browse ... command to select this directory and click OK
- You are now proposed to add the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker: just click OK
- Follow instructions in the Setup dialogue box that will then appear to specify the settings
needed by the driver to work properly.
This procedure is in fact rather straightforward and much easier to perform than to read. In
case of doubt just use the Windows' help facility or refer to the instructions given in Chapter
5. Control Panel in the Microsoft Windows User's Guide.
Enable interrupts during playback Setup Option
By default, the PC Speaker driver disables all interrupts while playing sounds for optimal
sound quality. As a result, you will notice that the mouse cursor, keyboard or other processes
will not respond while sounds are being played through the PC Speaker. You can set PC
Speaker to enable interrupts for serial port activity and mouse movements in the PC Speaker
setup dialogue, at the expense of sound quality.
To set this option:
- Run Control Panel
- Open the Drivers icon
- Select the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker from the list of Installed drivers
- Choose Setup
- Select or clear the Enable interrupts during playback check box.
Using the PC Speaker driver with AST systems
If you experience problems using the PC Speaker driver on an AST system, you should
contact AST Technical Support at 1-800-727-1278.
27-1278.

Coordination of research actions
The scope and contents of this type of scientific action is determined jointly at Community level by all parties involved.
However, the individual elements are furnished by the Member States, which finance the projects completely, and are responsible for their implementation.
The Commission's role is confined to the coordination and to the exchange of knowledge.
(Formerly called 'concentrated action')
and to the exchange of knowledge.

Bursaries, grants, fellowships
The Commission awards scholarships in science and technology in strategically important programmes, to enable young scientists and engineers to complete their education, to specialize, or to take over a research task in another Member State. Scholarships are also available within the framework of research conducted by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) at its establishments.
Students, young scientists and recognized researchers, who are citizens of a Member State of the EC, are eligible to apply. Support can be given for: activities associated with the completion of a course of study (12 months), post-university specialization (24 months), doctorate (long course of study, 36 months), doctorate (short course of study, 24 months), part of doctorate (24 months) and post-doctorate (24 months)..

Association contract
Long-term projects on a larger scale can be promoted by contracts of association.
A characteristic feature of this type of contract is the setting-up of a joint management committee which monitors the scientific, technical and financial implementation of the research project.
Contracts of this type have been concluded primarily for the implementation of the Community fusion and radiation protection programmes.nger projects on a larger scale can

Enable interrupts during playback Setup Option
By default, the PC Speaker driver disables all interrupts while playing sounds for optimal sound quality. As a result, you will notice that the mouse cursor, keyboard or other processes will not respond while sounds are being played through the PC Speaker; in other words, the PC is no longer responding for a while, which in practice means that you will not be able to stop the sound while playing. However, for your convenience, we have included in our Guide a possibility to interrupt sound by keeping the Escape key depressed for a while.
You can however set PC Speaker to enable interrupts for serial port activity and mouse movements in the PC Speaker setup dialogue, at the expense of sound quality.
To set this option:
- Run Control Panel
- Open the Drivers icon
- Select the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker from the list of
Installed drivers
- Choose Setup
- Select or clear the Enable interrupts during playback
check box.

The performance of your system can be automatically measured. This measure is valid only in the context of the consultation of this guide and should not be considered as a performance index of your system as such.
This procedure is intended to help you test different configurations of your system resources (mainly the memory).
The test bench will typically last 5 minutes. We also advise you to restart Windows before proceeding with this test, so that results are comparable: previous activity may indeed influence the measure.
You must however be aware that optimizing your system is not an easy task and you are strongly advised to ask for assistance from computer specialists.
Additional information is given in the chapter Optimizing Windows of your Windows User's Guide.
